Abstract: This paper studies how news coverage shapes the transmission of inflation information to household expectations. We combine daily household inflation expectations with television news coverage of inflation and professional-forecastbased surprises around scheduled CPI and PCE releases. On days with high news coverage, expectations move more in the direction of revealed surprises and, when we include the high inflation period, increase above and beyond these surprises. The findings are consistent with a model of noisy updating and infrequent updating.
